Walking Tour of Granville Island with Joost Bakker, Granville Island Architect

Please join us for a fascinating tour of Granville Island with Joost Bakker, one of the architects who created the vision and plan for Granville Island. While many of us visit the Island, few of us know the background to the creation of the Island, from concept to its design and building. Joost is a great storyteller and his experience and vision in urban design is inspiring.

Date: Wednesday September 24, 10 am, about 1.5 hours.

Meeting Place: Granville Island, in front of A Bread Affair, 1680 Johnston Cost: We will provide an honorarium to Joost for his tour, suggest $10 per person

Parking: There is paid parking available on Granville Island, and while there is transit, be prepared to walk.

Any questions, contact Margaret McNeil

Sign up no later than Wednesday September 17th . If there is interest, please let me know if you would like to have coffee or lunch at Dockside at the Granville Island hotel after the tour.

Joost's Bio: A fourth-generation architect, Joost focuses on innovative urban design, mixed-use, institutional, and cultural projects. His passion for enhancing the public realm has led to his involvement in projects across Canada, China, the United States, and Denmark. Within Canada, Joost has contributed to meaningful and memorable public spaces, such as the internationally-recognized Granville Island, the Governor General award-winning Richmond City Hall, and the new student union building at the University of British Columbia, dubbed ‘The Nest.’ Joost recently completed oversight on Ssθәqәlxenәm ts’exwts’áxwi7 Rainbow Park in downtown Vancouver and is leading Vancouver College’s community master plan. A source of guidance and inspiration for his colleagues, Joost encourages a culture of listening deeply before designing. He fosters collaboration between studios and helps facilitate knowledge transfers among designers and across disciplines. In addition, he energizes the studio and our design innovation by leading complex competition entries. Joost has maintained a parallel art practice throughout his career, including set design, monument design (most notably, the Royal Canadian Navy Monument), and numerous drawing exhibitions. Active in the public life of his community, Joost is on the Board of the Western Front and was president of the Vancouver Heritage Foundation and the Contemporary Art Gallery. He was also a member of the City of Vancouver Public Art Committee and a past member of a civic political party.
